Attendance Policy

All children 6 to 18 years of age in California are required by law to attend school each specified day until:
  • they graduate.
  • they pass a state proficiency examination and leave school with parental permission.
  • they reach 18.
  • they are 16 or 17 years of age, are employed full-time, and attend school a minimum of four hours a week.
Married, emancipated minors (permitted by court order to live alone), and teenage mothers are required to meet the compulsory attendance requirements.

Students will be allowed to complete assignments and tests administered during their absence if the absence is valid.

Excessive or unauthorized tardiness will not be tolerated by the district. Students leaving campus for any reason during school hours must have written parental and Attendance approval prior to leaving campus.

Permission to attend school other than full-time can be granted only by the school district.

The district School Attendance Review Board (SARB), a legally constituted panel or police and probation officers, parents, community members, county agencies and school representatives decide whether a parent and/or student is in violation of school attendance laws. When attendance violations occur, the board has the legal right to summon the parents and students for a hearing.

Valid Absences

Valid absences include:
  • Illness
  • Doctor Appointments (Doctor note REQUIRED)
  • Dental Appointments (Dentist note REQUIRED)
  • Family Funeral
  • Special Circumstances (i.e., court appearance)
Students will be allowed to complete assignments and tests administered during their absence if the absence is valid.

NOTE: Parents are required to report absences by telephone to the school before noon the day the absence occurs, or in writing upon the student's return.
Absences for baby sitting, vacations, or "out of town" are NOT valid excuses and result in loss of learning and loss of school revenue.

Excessive or unauthorized tardiness will not be tolerated by the district. Students leaving campus for any reason during school hours must have written parental and Attendance approval prior to leaving campus.  Students with excessive/unauthorized absences/tardies or who are in violation of attendance laws may:
  • Be referred to an administrator and assigned discipline (i.e., Saturday School). Be referred to the Student Intervention Team (SIT).
  • Be referred to the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB), a legally constituted panel of police and probation officers,
  • parents, community members, county agencies and school representatives.

Requesting Homework

QUESTION: "If I'm absent, how do I request homework?"
ANSWER: "You have 1 of 2 options."

Option 1: If you are absent a minimum of 3 consecutive days -
  • Parent must contact the Attendance Office by 9:30 AM to request homework.
  • Homework may then be picked up in the Attendance Office between 3:00 - 4:00 PM on the day of the request.

Option 2: If you are absent 1 or 2 consecutive days, use the Study-Buddy System or the Website:
  • Exchange telephone numbers with 1 or 2 responsible students in each class. (Exchanging telephone numbers if voluntary)
  • When you are absent, your STUDY-BUDDY should save extra copies of your assignments.
  • Telephone your STUDY-BUDDY when you are absent to ask about the day's classwork.
  • When you return to school, check with each teacher to confirm the missed assignments. This is your responsibility, not your buddy's!
  • Website - go to Lexington website at www.lexingtonjhs.org, under Teachers/Staff, then check under the teacher's name and the period you have them.  Look under 'Homework and Assignments' to see what you missed.

Note: For your convenience, a STUDY-BUDDY SYSTEM form can be found in your Binder Reminder.
